For the Waterloo Estate in Romford, we designed a temporary landscape that brings beauty, nature and a sense of place to the community during a period of significant change. Working within a modest budget and with the knowledge that the site will ultimately be redeveloped, the design focuses on simple, durable interventions that make a lasting impression without unnecessary expense.
Wildflower meadows bring colour and biodiversity, while natural play elements and well-crafted timber furniture create informal spaces for children, families and residents to gather. Natural materials, including stone cobbles and timber, give the landscape a tactile, grounded quality, creating a welcoming environment that feels considered rather than temporary.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can transform an interim space into something genuinely beautiful, useful and enjoyed by the community while the wider regeneration of the estate takes place.
