A Short Guide to Budget-Friendly Garden Design Ideas

A thoughtful, considered and dynamic garden space can make your house feel like a home. We think of it as a living space where you can enjoy your coffee, switch off and share memories with your family and friends.

While you might be under the notion that revamping your garden is expensive and takes lots of time, we are here to say this isn’t always the case.

With our simple, practical tips and a splash of creativity, you can easily enhance the appearance of your garden. Implement our affordable garden design tips to improve the quality of your outdoor space.

From giving your fence a fresh coat of paint to being smart about what and how you plant, or finding new uses for old items, these affordable garden maintenance tips will add style without draining your wallet.

Let’s jump in.

1. Use a Fresh Coat of Paint

Painting old fences with a dark colour can make a big difference in your garden. It provides a natural background for plants and promotes the feeling of a tidy, well-maintained space. Darker colours tend to blend in and look more contemporary, as compared to alternative, brighter colours. Paint your fence, shed, and old and tired furniture for a quick and impactful change. With this alone, your garden will see a new lease of life.

2. Planting On A Budget

Buying perennial plants will make the quickest impact to your garden space on a limited budget. Remember that if you’re buying a plant in flower then you may well be paying a premium for it, so it’s worthwhile doing your homework before purchasing. While it is important to layer with shrubs, (especially evergreen shrubs), for seasonal interest, you can buy these in smaller pot sizes and let them mature and grow in your garden. The most cost effective option is to grow from seed and it is probably the most rewarding way of growing plants if you have a little bit more time on your hands!

3. Recycle Old Furniture as Planters

Another great affordable garden design idea is re-purposing old furniture as planters. Give a fresh purpose to retired items by turning them into unique plant holders. Old sinks and sinks, buckets, suitcases and boots can be transformed into quirky planters - just remember to add drainage holes to the base. Moreover, wooden pallets also offer versatile options for garden projects. Not only are pallets affordable but they can be used to create various garden furniture pieces, including vertical beds.

4. Illuminate Your Garden Using Stake Lights

Stake lights are great for adding ambience to your space. Place among the plants or along pathways. They are cheap and add a lovely decorative touch to your garden. Alternatively, solar lights are a sustainable and great long-term investment.

5. Create a Gravel Garden or Pathway

When it comes to garden pathways, gravel is a cheaper option than paving and with the right tools, it is a fairly easy project. Planting also goes a long way within a gravel garden and you need fewer to make an instant impact. Start by demarcating the path or gravel garden area and remove loose soil or grass, then lay out a permeable membrane to stop the weeds from growing on the gravel path. After this, spread the gravel about 2.5cm deep.

If you’re not sold on gravel, pine tree bark mulch work well too, adding a rustic touch that contrasts with your lawn and plants. This simple and affordable idea enhances your garden's appeal while providing a practical pathway.

6. Welcome Wildlife in Your Garden

To bring more wildlife into your garden on a budget, a great starting point is to add simple bird-friendly elements. Installing a bird feeder, bath, or house attracts more birds and can be cheaply integrated by using an old tin can. Another way to promote biodiversity is by incorporating native plants which is great for local flora and fauna as well as pollinators.
